Abacar Soilihi

PhD student at the Faculty of Science, Technology and Health of the Reunion's University and the CIRAD, Chakira will work for six months on the essential oil of Ylang-Ylang in the Comores and in the Reunion. He will be collaborate with QualiREG network in the continuity of its previous work and for the UMR QualiSud as part of its thesis.

Ylang-Ylang essential oil in the Comoros is renowned for its unique quality and is a product of great economic importance for its country. Indeed, this essential oil is the second largest export product of the country, which is also the largest producer in the world. Its reputation and the profit generated have led to the proliferation of frauds which are a real problem for the maintenance of this quality product and for the support of reliable producers.

As part of the QualiREG network, during its missions in 2017 and 2018, Chakira was working on the construction of a database based on the comparison of quality essential oils with adulterated oils, in order to develop a predictive detection model for frauds. He used the Spectroscopy (SPIR) technique, a fast and non-destructive tool for detecting the nature composition of various products. For this new mission, Chakira will analyze and process the spectral data collected in different SPIR devices and will validate the predictive models or not of adulteration.

From the UMR QualiSud Chakira has begun a thesis on the development of the quality of Ylang-Ylang and the influence of abiotic and technological factors focuses on the evolution of aromatic compounds in five different stages of Ylang-Ylang flower's maturity. He will also begin the writing of two scientific articles on the evaluation of the impact of life patterns on the quality of the Ylang-Ylang essential oil of the Comoros and on the reliable and rapid detection of essential oil frauds by SPIR.
