A day dedicated to regional cooperation and to food security in Indian Ocean

Representatives of each Indian Ocean island met in a regional cooperation day organized at the occasion of the 40th Fair of Bras-Panon.

It's in Bras-Panon, at the 40th agricultural fair, than delegations of Indian Ocean islands met in a day dedicated to regional cooperation. The purpose of this meeting was to make an inventory of agricultural development and cooperation in food security strategies. The discussions were oriented towards strengthening regional cooperation and economic exchange between islands of IO zone.

Were present : Daniel Gonthier, Mayor of Bras-Panon; Alain Armand, representative of General Council of Reunion Island, Philippe Simon, Director of DAAF Reunion and representative of Dominique Sorain, Prefect of Reunion Island; Olivier Degenmann, Vice President of DAAF Reunion; Mohamed Halifa, State Secretary delegate to fishing and farming in Comoros; François Rasolo, Economic Adviser of the President of the Republic in charge of agriculture and food security; Jacqueline Sauzier, Director of Mauritius Chamber of Agriculture; Antoine Marie Moustache and Mark Naiken, Ministers of fisheries and agriculture in Seychelles; Eric Jeuffrault, Regional Director of CIRAD Réunion-Mayotte; Patrick Hoareau, Director of FRCA; Mohamed Elanrif Bamcolo, Delegate of County Council of Reunion Island.

The day began with a opening speech by Daniel Gonthier, Mayor of Bras-Panon thanking all participants and placing the day under the sign of brotherhood and solidarity between peoples of Indian Ocean. Alain Armand , representative of General Council of Reunion Island, raised the problem : "How to exchange together and how feed people while poverty is still a reality in Indian Ocean ?" Philippe Simon, Director of DAAF Reunion then insisted on developing internal strengths of each country and concrete identification of trade routes "win-win".

Each delegation of the Indian Ocean presented an overview of food and agricultural situation in their country as well as development wishes.

The morning ended with a presentation by Eric Jeuffrault, Regional Director of CIRAD Réunion - Mayotte, of the PRéRAD platform.

The afternoon gave opportunities to discussions with the objectif to implement regional cooperation on food security.

The meeting concluded with the desire to put agriculture and farmers in the center of the issues and to encourage meetings and exchanges to better know each other and grow better together.
